Classic Trieste tour

1h30′ – main attractions and facts

Welcome to Trieste! This guided tour will take you through the heart of this historic city, exploring its most iconic spots in just 90 minutes.

We begin our journey in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest sea-facing square in Europe. Surrounded by majestic neoclassical and eclectic buildings, the square reflects the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From here, we will admire the Town Hall, the Fountain of the Four Continents, and the striking view of the Gulf of Trieste.

From Piazza Unità, we move on to Piazza della Borsa, once the commercial hub of the city. The neoclassical Stock Exchange building still stands as a symbol of Trieste’s rich mercantile history. This square, vibrant with cafes and boutiques, highlights the city’s economic past and cultural present.

Next, we will walk through the narrow, winding streets of the Ex-Ghetto, an area that was once home to the Jewish community of Trieste. The streets still retain a unique atmosphere, reflecting the rich diversity of the city’s heritage.

Continuing our walk, we reach the Canal Grande, a charming canal lined with elegant buildings, where boats were once docked to unload goods from distant lands. Here, you’ll see the beautiful Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon, with its stunning domes and lavish Byzantine decorations. This church reflects the multicultural spirit of the city, where various communities, including Serbs, Greeks, and Jews, have left their mark.

Our next stop is Borgo Teresiano, a district built during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Its wide streets and rational layout are a contrast to the older parts of the city, and the area is a testament to Trieste’s planned expansion in the 18th century.

As we explore the streets, we’ll also pause at one of Trieste’s historic cafes, where writers, intellectuals, and revolutionaries once gathered. Cafés like Caffè San Marco, Caffè degli Specchi, and Caffè Tommaseo have been key meeting points for literary figures.

Finally, we will touch on Trieste’s literary heritage, with a special focus on James Joyce, who lived and worked in the city for several years. Joyce found inspiration in the multicultural atmosphere of Trieste, writing part of Ulysses and Dubliners here. Trieste has a rich literary history, and Joyce’s connection to the city is one of the most celebrated.

Our tour ends with a panoramic view of the city’s cultural blend, where history, commerce, and art intertwine, leaving visitors with a deep appreciation for Trieste’s unique charm.
